Police department will shortly get a 19,000 sq ft plot from govt to construct a police station
For years, the Kodigehalli police station has been running in a rented building. Situated on the first floor, it shared space with private establishments in a rented building. A senior citizen took it upon himself to get the government to sanction land, so that the station could be housed in its own building. B Karigowda, the local citizen who initiated the move for the land, is both happy and surprised to see things move fast and the land has been sanctioned within three months.
Karigowda, 63, a retired employee of Escorts, had been writing to the authorities including local MLAs and senior police officers to get the government to grant land for construction of the police station for nearly a year. He said, "The demand is years old. In the last few months however, things moved very fast. I had written to senior officers as well as local MLA and minister Krishna Byre Gowda."
Karigowda had even offered to provide land if there is no government land available. "The station is in a rented building that is not easily accessible. This building does not even have a compound wall and independent sanctity," he said. On a weekly basis, he visited the tahsildar and revenue department office to check on the progress. His efforts got senior police officers to officially seek land for the station. After that Karigowda followed up the government officials and the MLA.
Tahsildar Balappa Handigunda, said, "The land is nearly 19,000 sq ft and will be handed over in two-three days to the police department. The local people have been demanding a new station for sometime now. After letters from the citizens and the official request from the police department, we sent the proposal to the government. The administration took interest and land was identified."
'Local MLA took interest' Karigowda, who has even donated a television set to the police station, said, "I should admit that it was not my individual effort. As a concerned citizen, I did my bit but I was surprised how things moved quickly after that. The land was identified and on December 6, 2013, an official order sanctioning the land was given by the tahsildar. The MLA's interest in the matter did the trick. I have been living here for 36 years. For the last six years the location of the station was a concern. Only if the police have a good atmosphere can they carry out their duty efficiently."
The Kodigehalli station covers Sahakaranagar, Thindlu, Kempegowdanagar, Byatarayanapura, Bhadrappa Layout, Balaji Layout, Sanjeevininagar and other private residential areas in the surroundings. "After this, I think things can happen if you persist. There are other things that require attention in the area and I will be happy to pursue them with the authorities," Karigowda said.
