Police seek Mumbai student's help

Wednesday, 6 August 2014 - 7:05am IST | Agency: DNA

Mumbai Police is toying with the idea of stationing college students at police station helpdesks to help women, children and senior citizen complainants. The city police are also working on a plan to create anti-eve teasing squads at colleges and schools with students as members.

Challenges faced by police
"Not only terrorism and organised crime but also safety of women, children as well as senior citizens are challenges all across the country," said Mumbai police commissioner Rakesh Maria, at a function organised at the Y B Chavan Auditorium.

Measures taken so far
"Many measures have been taken for the safety of women. A woman need not required to come to police station to register her complaint as a special helpdesk counter is already in place for them," he added. The helpdesk is now manned by women police constables.

Why youngsters?
However, Maria said, "We are thinking of involving college students to man such helpdesk. I feel that this will make victims' feel more confident and comfortable talking to them. Also the gap between the police and students will also be narrowed down. At the same time, the youth will understand the functioning of the police and we will understand their point of view."
The Mumbai top cop stated that plans are afloat to start an anti-eve teasing squad consisting of students at each college and school. "Every constable from a police station will be in-charge of students' squads of 2-3 colleges and schools. Women marshalls are being trained to patrol streets," he added.

Appeal to the youth
State woman and child welfare minister Varsha Gaikwad, appealed for youth participation in bringing down crimes against women and children. "Government is preparing policies and implementing them. We are doing our best but at the end of the day, your participating is equally important," she said.
