PUNEAshaLagad's murder on Monday evening inside her flat in a busy area has once again thrown the spotlight on how vulnerable senior citizens living in the city by themselves are. The Punepolice on Tuesday said elderly people must register their names in the nearest police station for security.

Lagad (72) was found murdered in Laxmi Nivas apartment on Kumthekar Road. She was not among those registered with the Vishrambaugh police station.

While police have appealed to senior citizens to register their names in police stations at the earliest, the social security cell of the crime branch has asked the children of senior citizens to provide information about their parents along with a list of dependants to be contacted in an emergency.

Deputy commissioner of police (Zone I) Makarand Ranade told TOI that senior citizens would be encouraged to enrol with the police. Those in charge of the police stations have met members of laughter clubs and senior citizens' club since they gather regularly in gardens, open spaces and halls.

"If senior citizens approach us, then it becomes easier to provide them the required assistance in emergency situations if all their details are available in the police stations," said Ranade.

Policemen regularly visit residences of senior citizens to check their well-being. "The initiative helps us interact with people over 65 years of age, understand their problems and find solutions. Police have started patrolling places dominated by senior citizens for their safety," he added.

According to Ranade they also visit housing societies and ask people to provide information about the elderly who are living alone. "The office-bearers have responded well to our appeals and they play a key role in providing information about senior citizens in the societies. Police stations are also in touch with the senior citizens' associations," he added.

Senior police inspector Bhanupratap Barge of the social security cell of crime branch said that the lists have details about educated senior citizens, but illiterate persons are left out.

"They must also register. We will holding meetings in slum areas so that they can approach us so that we can create confidence and they do not feel harassed or neglected. No information given to us will be shared. It will be confidential so that more people hold regular dialogues with us about their problems," Barge added.
