Today I saw a lizard chasing its prey on our cemented garden floor and succeeding. What a disappointment! It was a piece of floating cotton!

Police stations become hassle-free for eldersMADURAI: The Madurai rural police has become the first police unit in the state to have implemented the rules framed by the state government in 2009, based on Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007. Now, elders visiting any of the police stations in the district would not only be treated with respect but also provided with required guidance. They can also get their complaints registered without any hassles. As many as 119 volunteers consisting of retired government officials and respected elders from the district have been selected for the purpose. These volunteers who have been allocated to police stations in their concerned areas would help the elderly people approaching the station. The volunteers would facilitate them to get their cases registered and investigated appropriately.--
An orientation programme emphasising the rules and regulation related to the elderly, along with the duties and responsibilities of the volunteers was conducted at the district rural police office on Tuesday. There are 49 police stations in the district of which 42 stations have been incorporated with the volunteers. The remaining stations would be covered soon. The implementation was the joint effort of the district rural police and Help Age India.
V Balakrishnan, superintendent of police, Madurai district said, "Madurai district police is the first to implement the Act in the state. The selected volunteers would be issued with identity cards. They would enable the communication between the elderly people and the concerned police officers and make sure that the complaint is registered. In every police station there is one special officer taking care of child-related issues.
Officers taking care of child-related issues would be provided with the additional charge to take care of issues related to the old age people."
The number of complaints received from the elderly has been on the rise. Most of the complaints are related to property issues. There is a need to attend their problems swiftly, said C Radhakrishnan, senior manager, resource mobilization, Help Age India.
Volunteers from various organisations including Madurai district retired government officials association, retired police ministerial staff association and retired police officers association have enrolled. They have been provided with requisite training and guidance to carryout the work, said B Udayakumar, Development Professional, Help Age India.
