KOLKATA: The murder of an 83-year-old man inDeshapriya Park and the Short Street shooting have jolted Kolkata Police into taking safety measures to prevent a repeat of such incidents. Officers in charge of all police stations have been asked to draw up a list of elderly persons living in their area and every disputed property.

At a special crime review meeting on Friday, police commissioner Surajit Kar Purkayastha emphasized the need to protect the elderly and asked OCs to check with every senior citizen in their area, regardless of whether they are registered with the police's Pranam project.

"The Pranam initiative to reach out to city elders has received good response. Yet, there are many elders who find it difficult to reach police stations or schools where our camps are held. So local beat officers will try and coordinate between them and police stations," said an officer.

Police will visit senior citizens and coach them on the dos and don'ts of staying safe. In the Deshapriya Park murder, the alleged killer - sweeper Shona Das - had been working for Ranajit Chatterjee for 15 years. The cops will distribute a factsheet for the elderly so that they are extra cautious when dealing with servants. "Besides offering usual tips like not discussing financial matters in front of servants and avoiding opening cupboards in their view, we are encouraging people to keep some neighbours on speed dial," said an officer.

Investigators have found Shona had tried to push accomplice Abhijit into the house on three earlier occasions and succeeded on the fourth. "However, no one in the thickly populated area took notice of the fact that a stranger was lurking outside the house. Community policing is the need of the hour," added the officer.

In order to build trust and send out a strong message, police have decided to complete the Deshapriya Park chargesheet in "record time". "This is why the homicide wing will prepare the chargesheet even though south division police did the investigation," said a detective.

Another trend that worries police is organized violence for property. Two persons were shot dead during a takeover bid on a disputed Short Street plot on November 11 and a fortnight later, a developer was shot and injured, allegedly by rival promoters.

In the Short Street case, Shakespeare Sarani police officers came under the scanner. OC Piyush Kundu and sub-inspector Nur Ali were transferred and a third officer, who visited the disputed property just before the pre-dawn violence, is also under the lens. In the Narkeldanga shooting, the accused is an alleged police informer.

After reviewing the two cases, the Lalbazar top brass decided to compile a list of all litigated properties in the city. OCs will have to inform their area deputy commissioners on the main claimants in the legal tussles and the status of the investigation. "We have been asked to get details of litigated cases. If a police station has too many litigated properties, the deputy commissioner will have to bring it to the notice of Lalbazar. We will also have to get information on the present legal status of such properties and the number of FIRs registered. The report will cover only the criminal cases and not civil suits," said an officer.

Explaining the need for such an order, police said the Short Street investigation has revealed that the first deed - on the basis of which KMC awarded ownership to Concast Steel owner Sanjay Sureka - was "forged with the help of Parag Majmudar". "We have found that Sureka was tricked into buying the land using fake deeds. We have found that the deed did not even have Sailabala's signature that would vest the power of attorney to another person," said a source.
