JAIPUR: It seems that Jaipur police have not been able to show their concern for senior citizens who are soft targets for robbers. Though a few police stations have started identifying senior citizens who live alone and started maintaining their records, majority of the police stations are yet to offer a helping hand to them.

The senior police officers of the Jaipur policecommissionerate have been claiming that Jaipur police through its beat constables is keeping a track on the senior citizens who live alone and has been facilitating them not only in terms of providing them security but also offering help. However, Saturday's incident where two robbers posed as courier boys robbed an elderly woman in Jawahar Nagar, shows a totally different side.

"Every police station has been asked to keep a tab on senior citizens living in their localities. We have asked our men to regularly visit them to offer them help in solving their problems," claimed a senior police officer on Sunday.

After Saturday' incident another elderly lady was robbed by unidentified robbers in Vidhyadhar Nagar locality who asked the woman to hand over the jewellery to them.

"We have maintained a proper record of senior citizens and every beat constable is aware of the number of senior citizens he needs to take care of. They have also been visiting these citizens on a regular basis," said Pushpendra Singh, circle inspector, Kotwali police station.

Many of the police stations took this task as extra paper work. "After the police commissionerate we are already engaged with so many things. However, if any senior citizen contacts us on their own and puts on record their problems we always help them," said an officer of Jhotwara policestation.

At a time when elderly couples in the state are being targeted by miscreants, more than 600elderly people, who live alone, are still not registered under the Sambhal Yojna. Under 'Sambhal Yojna,' the elderly couples have to register themselves with the local police station and the beat constables then remain in touch with them.

According to the police they are facing problems in keeping a tab on the citizens since the residents of various localities are not assisting the police.
