In a repeat of the police brutality at Anayara in Thiruvananthapuram, around five months ago, the Vadakara Circle Inspector of Police visibly gripped the genitals of a senior citizen amidst protest by local residents against the survey for land acquisition for the widening of the Azhiyur-Vengalam stretch of NH-17 at Moorad on Wednesday.
CI Subash Babu was seen pulling the pants near the genitals of Narayanan Nair, an ex-serviceman hailing from Panthalayani, while dragging him to the police jeep.
The incident occurred during the agitation organised by the members of the NH Janakeeya Karma Samithi (People’s Action Committee). The members of the action committee objected to the survey of individual plots by the Vadakara tahsildar (LA), demanding that the government should first announce a comprehensive rehabilitation package for those to be evicted in Vadakara and Koyilandy taluks.
Subash rejected the charges and said he only gripped the “belt and pants of the person when he resisted arrest and did not inflict any injury on his genitals.”
“Police removed the protesters as the Vadakara tahsildar maintained that the District Collector had directed them to go ahead with the survey. While removing the protesters, this particular person resisted and we had to take him away forcefully. However, certain vested organisations, involving antisocial elements, exploited the situation when the visuals went on air,” he said.
Alleging police brutality, the LDF district committee has called a hartal in Vadakara and Koyilandy on Thursday. LDF district convenor Mukkam Mohammed demanded that the district authorities should stop the survey until the declaration of a comprehensive package for the residents.
Following direction from Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala, North Zone ADGP N Shankar Reddy will probe into the police action.
