Fwd: [sss-global] COPS WILL CHECK ON SENIOR CITIZEN'S SAFETY - POLICE CHIEFE

Cops will check on senior citizens’ safety: police chief

After the city police launched a scheme to adopt senior citizens to ensure protection for them, it has been found that out of the 39,000 senior citizens registered with the ‘Elderline’ scheme, 4,200 live alone. Commissioner of police, Satyapal Singh said that he had issued instructions to police stations all over the city to register all senior citizens and specifically those who live alone.

“Police personnel will regularly visit senior citizens to check on their safety and maintain a register or book in which the policeman in charge would have to sign with the date and timing of their visit,” said Singh.

Singh also added that in cases where the senior citizen was a woman, only lady police officials or women constables would visit them.

Police have also decided to tie up with non-governmental organisations (NGOs) that can work with the police, counsel senior citizens and also speak to their children on the issue of safety and other matters. Officials also said the police will try to do all things practical to help senior citizens and the idea to tie up with the NGOs was to help them with other social needs.

In the past few months, there has been an increase in the number of cases of senior citizens being murdered in the city.

The scheme to adopt senior citizens was initiated by the Mumbai police on the instruction of home minister RR Patil.
